NAIROBI, Kenya, Jun 16 – A suspicious package delivered to the Canadian High Commission in Nairobi caused panic on Thursday morning, leading to an evacuation.
Police deployed there said the parcel was delivered by a van from Fedex, but no further details were offered.
Nairobi Police Chief Japheth Koome who rushed to the High Commission declined to give further details, only saying “everything is being done to secure the High Commission.”
Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet, reacting to news reports flashed on local media that there was a bomb scare, said: “we wish to assure the public that everything is being done to establish the nature of the 30 kilogram parcel that was delivered there this (Thursday) morning.”
“Police were called in when staff at the High Commission realised that they were unfamiliar with the parcel which was delivered by Fedex, and that is why the evacuation was ordered for safety purposes,” the Police Chief told Capital FM news on telephone.
“Experts are currently at the scene with sniffer dogs and we will shortly know what it is, there is no cause for alarm for now.”
The incident led to the closure of a section of Limuru Road where traffic was diverted as police combed the area.
