NAIROBI, Kenya, Jun 29 – Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero appeared before the Senate Committee on Public Accounts and Investment on Wednesday morning where he revealed that the National Government owes the County Sh69 billion in accumulated parking fees.

He told the Committee Chaired by Kisumu Senator Anyang’ Nyong’o that the amount has accrued over the last 10 years.

He stated that no money has been paid even despite a meeting with President Uhuru Kenyatta two years ago when the matter was raised.

“We had a meeting with the President about two years ago over this same issue. Despite this nothing has happened and we are appealing to the Senate to assist us especially when it comes to recovering these funds,” he stated.

The Senate Committee stated that it will now summon the Treasury Cabinet Secretary to explain why City Hall has not been paid the monies owed.

“This is a serious matter and of grave concern especially when no action is being taken even after a directive by the President. I agree that we need to follow this matter perhaps to summon the Treasury Cabinet Secretary to explain this anomaly,” Nyong’o stated.

The Nairobi Governor further stated that since the inception of the e-payment system at the County Government, the issue of fake receipts and permits have been dealt with permanently.

He stated that 62 officials who were involved in the racket have been fired and charges proffered against them.

“With the full implementation of the e system, the issue of fake receipts and permits has been dealt with successfully. There are no fake receipts or permits in circulation anymore and sixty two officials involved in the scam have been arrested,” he stated.

He pointed out that since then; the revenue collection at City Hall has doubled.

The Nairobi Governor also expressed optimism that the scuffle caused as a result of allegations made against him by Senator Mike Sonko will be addressed as soon as possible.

Making a statement as he resumed answering audit queries before the Senate Committee on Public Accounts and Investment, the Nairobi Governor stated that the incident was poorly received by Kenyans and should not be condoned.

His earlier appearance was characterised by a confrontation with Senator Mike Sonko, who made serious accusations against him, leading to the premature end of the session.

Kidero had earlier said he can only appear before the senate, after getting an apology from Sonko.

Nyong’o however stated that the matter had been addressed and it has been left in the hands of Speaker Ekwee Ethuro who is will make determination on the incident.
