NAIROBI, Kenya, Jun 22 – Six terror suspects were on Tuesday night arrested in Kwale after weeks of evading the police.

The suspects had escaped on Monday during a police raid that led to the killing of their two accomplices, according to police.

“The six are now in custody and will appear in court today (Wednesday),” Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet said.

He said the suspects were linked to the killing of community leaders in Kwale.

When two terrorists were killed in Kwale on Monday, the police chief announced that it was a major achievement.

“We have smashed a terrorist hideout in Kwale where four of them have been arrested and two others killed,” he said.

Police have stepped up the war against terrorism in the wake of new terror threats in the country – mainly in regions bordering Somalia – where five people, including police officers were killed this week.

On Monday, an ambulance driver was killed and three medics seriously wounded when their vehicle hit a landmine en-route to pick a patient in Garissa.

The incident occurred at Owane between Hulugho and Sangaili, authorities said.

The attack occurred hours after five police officers were killed and four others wounded in a Rocket Propelled Grenade (RPG) attack in Mandera.

The Al Shabaab, East Africa’s long-time Al-Qaeda branch, is headquartered in Somalia where it is fighting to overthrow the internationally-backed government in Mogadishu, which is protected by 22,000 African Union troops, including Kenyan soldiers.

The Somali-led insurgents have staged repeated attacks in Kenya, including the killing of at least 67 people at Nairobi’s Westgate Mall in 2013 and the massacre of 148 people at Garissa University in April 2015.
