Woman tells of agony, death of 5 relatives in Huruma house collapse

The Institution of Surveyors of Kenya on Monday accused the County Government of only making empty threats to owners of hazardous buildings, at expense of the city residents.

The institution complains that the County Government has failed to enforce the set procedures to control the chaotic housing sector.

The institution chairman Stephen Ambani also attribute graft to the prevailing problem that has led to death of hundreds of Kenyans, whom buildings have collapsed the latest being in Huruma.

“It is unfortunate that each year, buildings continue to collapse killing hundreds of people and injuring many others and nothing tangible is forthcoming despite the reason being apparent,” he said.

He said they have already initiated an in-house audit to identify rogue officials while calling on other professional bodies to take stern action against such members.

“All the individuals whether in public or private sector involved at the level of approval and supervision of the subject buildings should after investigations be held criminally and professionally responsible,” he said.

Ambani further urged the Government to enact the proposed Built Environment Bill, “to strengthen and harmonize as well as simplify the regulatory framework in the sector.”

He said the new laws shall establish national standards and practices in the housing sector.

Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero has since attributed to graft among other issues hampering the demolition of unfit buildings.
