NAIROBI, Kenya, May 20 – President Uhuru Kenyatta was on Friday morning meeting with members of the United Nations Security Council, over the government’s decision to shut down the Dadaab refugee camp.
The talks come in the wake of the formation of a 14-member taskforce – the National Taskforce on Repatriation of Refugees – whose role is to develop modalities, timelines and costs for the repatriation of refugees in Kenya.
The body is also tasked with the setting up of refugee management and control strategies, during the period of repatriation.
According to a statement from State House, during the talks with the President, the diplomats from the 15-member Security Council, will further discuss the situation in Somalia and the work of AMISOM.
“AMISOM has considerably degraded the capability of Al-Shabaab and liberated large areas previously held by the group. Somalia is now safer than it has ever been in 25 years,” the statement pointed out.
“The liberation of these areas has altered the security landscape and offers a rare opportunity for the Government of Somalia to initiate the process of state building, and create public safety and security for its people.”
The statement further reveals that AMISOM faces several challenges one of them in particular being the absence of troops in the Gedo region.
“The President will discuss other Kenyan concerns about AMISOM. Among them is the lack of critical components necessary to achieve the strategic objective of stabilizing Somalia, such as robust land, air and maritime capabilities and assets,” it stated.
Following the talks President Kenyatta will resume his visit to the North Eastern Region, on day two of a three-day tour that will focus on Wajir County.
