NAIROBI, Kenya, May 11 – The team investigating the murder of businessman Jacob Juma said Wednesday it had made remarkable progress after finding two cartridges from an AK47 believed to have been used in the gruesome murder.

“The team has made very good progress and they found two cartridges from Ak47 which is a weapon of choice for criminals,” Directorate of Criminal Investigations boss Ndegwa Muhoro told Capital FM News, terming the new development as “helpful because then we start analyzing them to establish if the gun used has been recorded as having been used to commit a crime elsewhere. It is a vital lead in getting those involved.”

In a bid to unravel the mystery behind the killing of the controversial businessman, Muhoro said he has assigned more detectives to probe the killing which, according to opposition leaders, was politically motivated.

CORD leader Raila Odinga has sensationally claimed that the elite Flying Squad unit of the police was used to assassinate Juma, but police have denied the accusation.

“It is not true to say police assassinated Juma. We call for calm as detectives do all that is within their means to unravel the murder,” Muhoro said, adding “We are not specific as to any theory in the murder now, we are looking at all possible angles and detectives will be guided by the investigations they are carrying out.”

Various leaders—including Senator Moses Wetangula has claimed that he met Juma days before his murder during which he confided in him people who were plotting to assassinate him. He has vowed to name them during his funeral set for Saturday at his Mungore village, Khasoko area of Bumula Constituency.

“We are urging anyone with information to come forward and give us whatever information they have, because they are those who have come out saying he spoke to them and confided in them people plotting to kill him and such like stories,” he said. “This is vital information to the team investigating the matter.”

A public viewing of the body will take place at Uhuru Park on Thursday afternoon, with top opposition leaders—including Odinga, Senate Minority Leader Moses Wetangula and Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka expected to attend.

On Wednesday detectives said they had taken Juma’s vehicle to the DCI headquarters for further analysis.

Juma was shot dead while driving to his Karen home in Nairobi on May 6. Various theories have been advanced—including a claim that he may have been shot dead elsewhere and his body dumped at the scene inside his vehicle from the analysis of bullets fired into the Mercedes Benz said to have been bullet proof.
