NAIROBI, Kenya, May 16 – Police have once again warned those planning to stage protests at Independent Electoral Boundaries Commission (IEBC) offices of dire consequences should they resort to violence.
Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet said police officers are under firm instructions to arrest and prosecute anyone disrupting peace by causing violence during the protests.
CORD leaders and their supporters are due to continue with their protests outside IEBC offices at Anniversary Towers in Nairobi and other parts of the country.
The opposition wants the poll agency to be reconstituted before the next year’s General Election.
They claim that the IEBC Commissioners have lost the public confidence among Kenyans and are unlikely to provide a free and fair atmosphere for the next poll to take place in.
Nairobi County Commander Japheth Koome who is leading the operation by hundreds of anti-riot police to barricade Anniversary Towers that houses the IEBC offices is due to brief the media on the security arrangements they have taken to deal with any cases of insecurity.
Police have previously lobbed tear gas and used water cannons to disperse the protesters agitating for the removal of IEBC commissioners ahead of next year’s General Election.
CORD has so far made two attempts to evict IEBC commissioners from office, but in both cases their efforts were thwarted by police.
In their last march to the IEBC headquarters, CORD leaders and their supporters were dispersed as they attempted to force their way through the building’s main gate and access IEBC offices with police lobbying teargas at them.
