NAIROBI, Kenya, May 3 – Police have foiled a terror attack plot by an East African terror group network that has links to Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) and arrested the mastermind Mohammed Abdi Ali who was a medical intern at Wote Hospital in Makueni County.

According to a statement from the Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet, the terror group was planning to carry out various attacks on Friday April 29, 2016 similar to the Westgate mall attack with the intention of killing innocent Kenyans.

Ali who studied at Kampala International University prior to returning to Kenya was presented in court and custodial orders for an additional 30 days for investigations were granted to the police.

Two other accomplices that include Ali’s wife Nuseiba Mohammed Haji who is also a student at Kampala International University as well as Fatuma Mohammed Hanshi have been arrested in Uganda.

Police are pursuing other suspects who went into hiding following Ali’s arrest among them Ahmed Hish and Farah Dagane both medical interns in Kitale.

The network also included medical experts with whom they planned to unleash a biological attack in Kenya using anthrax.

“The same network has been facilitating Kenyan youth to secretly leave Kenya to join terror groups in Libya and Syria. Ali’s terror network within Kenya spreads as far as Coast region, North Rift region and Western region as well as other countries that include Somalia, Libya and Syria,” the statement reads.

According to the investigations, the terror group linked to Ali has been engaged in active radicalisation, recruitment of university students and other Kenyan youths into joining the terrorism network.

“Kenya is working closely with other agencies in the region to ensure that the terror network is broken completely and those behind the terror plot are apprehended. The police take this opportunity to caution those giving refuge to these criminals and urge them to surrender them to the nearest police station failure to which they will be held culpable as accomplices,” the statement added.
