NAIROBI, Kenya, May 30 – The government has banned the use of Uhuru Park by anyone on Madaraka Day due to security concerns, and further accused two unnamed neighbouring countries of being behind a plot to destabilise the government.
Government Spokesman Erick Kiraithe told a news conference that the National Security Advisory Committee (NSAC) decided to shut out CORD and an evangelist laying claim to the grounds, after evaluating the security threats emanating from a double booking of the venue.
“First, it was decided that neither of the parties who had reserved the premises will be permitted to use the grounds on the material day. Both parties are therefore hereby requested to reorganise their activities accordingly,” Kiraithe stated.
He further added that “Nyayo National Stadium will also remain closed on Wednesday and no public events will go on there.”
The Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) and the Prayer Beyond Boundaries Ministries have in the past few days claimed to have secured the rights to hold a meeting at the historic grounds.
The government said “an unfortunate administrative oversight” saw both groups reserve the premises.
The Government Spokesman also revealed that two countries were behind the recent heightened political tensions aimed at destabilising the government.
“Investigations into recent political activity have yielded intelligence to the effect that there are individuals within the country who are working with two neighbouring countries to subvert the government and create conditions of instability, insecurity, lawlessness and strife,” he said.
Kiraithe said the government will not tolerate any attempts to compromise the quest for national security.
“The government considers these contemptible undertakings to be a betrayal of Kenya and Kenyans. These are acts of treason. Any person who collaborates with an enemy of Kenya is also an enemy of Kenya and will be met with the swift, full and unmitigated wrath of the law. In due course the government will be revealing the results of our investigations, and unmasking these despicable traitors,” the Government Spokesman stated.
