Macharia pointed out that the government launched the ambitious project to rehabilitate and upgrade roads at county levels in order to ease transportation of goods and services.
The transport CS was speaking in Kiambu County as he flagged off four road projects estimated at Sh4.2 billion.
“These projects will be in every county in Kenya. These projects will boost agriculture, tourism, trade and other economic activities and propel Kenya into African powerhouse,” he said.
The project in Kiambu included the tarmacking of Kibichoi-Ichaweri-Nembu-Gachika, Muigai Inn-Ichaweri-Gatundu-Kang’oo, Broadway-Kiandutu-Athena-Kiaganjo-Muthaiga and Courtesy Beach Loops.
The 80km project will be undertaken by H Young Contractors and will be supervised by Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KeRRA).
Gatundu South Member of Parliament Moses Kuria asked the contractors to work together with other agencies to facilitate timely execution of the project.
“Engage with Kenya Power, those laying down fibre optics and other agencies so that there will be no delays,” he asked.
The Transport Ministry launched annuity road financing programme that seeks to tarmac roads countrywide under two categories; low volumes in counties and major roads in towns. The Kiambu project is part of the 4,000km of roads commissioned in January.
“Ours is to deliver the 3,000km for the government by end of the year, and a further 7,000km after 2017,” said Transport Principal Secretary John Mosonik.
According to Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), Kenya’s paved road length has grown from 1,811km since independence to 9,273km
The Transport Cabinet Secretary also launched the Thika Townships Road Links.
