KIAMBU, Kenya, May 11 – The Government is ready to engage the Opposition in talks to resolve any issue ahead of next year’s General Election, Deputy President William Ruto has said.

Ruto said the Government will adhere to the Constitution when resolving any issues including the status of the Independent Electoral Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

He however, said the Opposition cannot employ protests and threats to coerce the Government.

“We are ready and willing to engage in talks. We want a coherent, logical and legal way to resolve any issue,” he said.

“We cannot resolve our problems through threats and intimidation. We have a Constitution that we should abide by,” added Ruto.

He said MPs should spearhead the talks that include views from religious leaders, civil society, professionals and any other Kenyan.

“We have MPs who can sit and resolve this issue through Constitutional means. Parliament should provide the forum for Kenyans to speak their mind,” he said.

Speaking during a funeral service for Lucia Njoki Mungai held at Kamuguri village, Gatundu South Constituency in Kiambu County on Wednesday, Ruto, however, said there is no one who can be removed from office through protests.

“They should point out which part of the Constitution prescribes removal of people from office through protests,” said Ruto.

He spoke as Jubilee MPs asked the Cord leadership to stop threats and intimidation ahead of next year’s General Election.

The MPs said the Opposition had adopted blackmail as a strategy to force the Government into talks on the status of the electoral commission.

MPs Ferdinand Waititu (Kabete), Kimani Ichungwa (Kikuyu) and Moses Kuria (Gatundu South) asked Cord leader Raila Odinga to stop threats and protests to force negotiations over issues pertaining to IEBC.
