NAIROBI, Kenya, May 2 – Deputy President William Ruto has called on county governments to tighten construction regulations to avoid a repeat of Friday night’s Huruma building collapse.

Ruto said the relevant departments should monitor all construction works to ensure safety standards are adhered to.

“We must make sure that we have buildings that meet the required specifications so that we avoid loss of lives and property,” Ruto said.

Meanwhile, Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery has reiterated that they will arrest and prosecute anyone found to have aided and abetted those guilty of constructing buildings which fall short of safety standards.

“Nobody will be allowed to bring insecurity to this country”, Nkaissery said.

The two made the calls during a church service in Kajiado as Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero laid the blame for the Huruma building collapse that has so far left 21 families bereaved on graft, tribal politics and the courts.
