NAIROBI, Kenya, May 23 – Police have dispersed CORD protestors who gathered to march to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) offices in Mombasa.
The coalition’s supporters had converged at the Uhuru Gardens before anti-riot police dispersed them and took charge of the streets.
A contingent of GSU officers had earlier been deployed on Moi Avenue where CORD leaders were expected to start their demonstration.
Mombasa Governor Hassan Ali Joho was expected to lead the CORD protest in Mombasa seeking the removal of all IEBC commissioners.
In Kisumu, the protests kicked off as demonstrators started marching from Kondele towards town centre.
Businesses remained closed as CORD supporters took to the streets with many traders fearing vandalism.
Nyanza Police Coordinator Willy Lugusa had earlier stated that the anti-IEBC protests in Kisumu would only go ahead if they were peaceful.
In Nairobi, there was heavy police presence at Anniversary Towers as police in the capital declared the march unlawful.
A showdown loomed after police earlier stated they had not been given any notification about the CORD protest.

The CORD leadership has stated that they will not relent in the demonstrations until all commissioners at the electoral body leave office.
