NAIROBI, Kenya, May 10 – Eight expelled University of Nairobi (UoN) students over last month’s students strike have moved to court to challenge their dismissal.

Led by Mike Jacobs Odhiambo, the aggrieved students have filed an urgent suit contesting the decision by the University to dismiss them.

According to them, the decision to expel five of them and suspend the rest was made hurriedly without following the due process.

The applicants say they were ambushed with a myriad of accusations unrelated to students unrest and were denied an opportunity to confront their accusers or call witnesses.

It is their argument that the move by the University amount to abuse of power.

They now want the High Court to quash the decision to expel and suspend them to enable them attend classes pending determination of the case.

They are also seeking to restrain the University from preferring criminal charges against them as threatened in letters of suspension.

Judge Weldon Korir has certified the matter as urgent and directed them to serve their suit papers on the University and Attorney-General to facilitate interpartes hearing on Thursday.
