NAIROBI, Kenya, May 31- The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) is set to be more empowered after the National Police Service resolved to attach a set of 200 officers to the authority.

Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet has since signed a Memorandum of Understanding with NTSA.

The IG says MOU will go a long way in achieving the common objective “of a safe, reliable, efficient transport system and proper enforcement of Traffic Laws in the country.”

He said the Police Service is making all efforts to ensure that reckless driving and impunity has been reduced considerably on the Kenyan roads with a view to reducing rampant road accidents.

“The officers who will be seconded to the NTSA will go through rigorous interview and vetting and those above the rank of Inspector must have been cleared by the National Police Service Commission Vetting Board,” he said.

This, he said will ensure officers entrusted in this noble and sensitive duty, should be officers of high integrity and moral standing.

The officers who will qualify will be charged with the responsibility of speed check limits, drunk driving, and enforcement of NTSA Act besides operationalization of instant fines, for minor offences.

NTSA Director General Francis Meja said road safety has become a serious concern not only to the government but also the general public because 85per cent of the accidents are attributed to human error.

“None of us is safe as long as we have drunk and reckless drivers on our roads,” he cautioned.

Meja singled out Boda Boda operator’s as notorious in disrespecting traffic lights and flouting traffic regulations at will saying motorcycle operators must obey traffic rules to avert accidents.

He said collaboration between NTSA and the NPS was crucial to bring order, discipline and safety on the Kenyan roads.

The NTSA Director hinted of a plan to establish a platform where members of the public will interact and freely share information with NTSA in order to rein on errant drivers and other motorists.
