NAIROBI, Kenya, May 19 – Two pupils drowned in Nairobi’s Kangemi area on Wednesday night following heavy rains.

The body of one of them was recovered while the search for the second one was ongoing according to police.

Both were pupils at Kanyorosha Primary School.

“The incident occurred when one of them was trying to clean her shoes,” National Disaster Management Unit Communication Officer Pius Masai said.

“The other pupil was swept by the floods when she tried to help her drowning colleague.”

Masai urged the residents of Nairobi, living around and along Nairobi River to be cautious.

In Murang’a County, one person died after a wall collapsed on him due to the ongoing heavy downpour in various parts of the country.

Masai said several vehicles were also damaged during the incident.

He has urged property owners to check on the stability of their walls and houses more so during this rainy season, to avoid loss of life and destruction of property.

He also asked the public to report to relevant authorities of any structure that appears or is suspected to be dangerous for speedy safety measures to be taken.
