NAIROBI Kenya, Apr 2- More than 30 University of Nairobi students have been arrested after they turned violent during a protest against the re-election of Babu Owino as the chairman of the Students Organization of Nairobi University (SONU).
The students claim that the election was marred by malpractices with some accusing Owino of deploying dictatorial tendencies for him to remain at the helm.
Police were deployed to restore calm inside the main campus and along the University Way where the students were protesting.
“It’s all about the elections. Some students feel it was not free and fair,” a student against Owino’s re-election told Capital News on anonymity grounds.
“The guy (Owino) has been there for years. It is time he let go of the position.”
The protest occurred after Owino was sworn in as the Chairman of the powerful student’s organisation.
Owino’s long service at the student organisation has attracted criticism.
