NAIROBI, Kenya Apr 30 – Seven people were killed when a six storey building collapsed in Huruma estate, Nairobi on Friday night, police said.

“It is very unfortunate that we have lost seven people after the house collapsed last night,” Nairobi police chief Japheth Koome told us on telephone on Saturday morning, “we have 121 others who have been rescued and taken to hospital.”

Volunteers—including the Kenya Red Cross and the police and the National Youth Service—were still undertaking rescue operations on Saturday morning when four people were pulled out alive, with varied injuries.

According to the Kenya Red Cross, a total of 150 households were affected.

Nairobi deputy Governor Jonathan Mueke who visited the scene on Saturday morning said an investigation will be launched to establish if the building was properly approved for construction, as they seek the cause of the tragedy.

“The building went down during the heavy rains but we still want to establish if all the procedures were followed when it was constructed,” he said.

The building is about two years old.

Adjacent houses were being evacuated on Saturday morning following fears they may also collapse.
