Nairobi, Kenya Apr 10 – Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero has ordered the immediate closure of Prosoya limited, a pet food processing factory that has been emitting foul smell along Enterprise Road near Shell Petrol Station in industrial area.

The governor said he took the action following complaints from area residents.
“I have ordered the factory closed on public health grounds until the management resolves the issue of dangerous emission, he said.

He also directed the factory owners to ensure smelly materials are cleared from its environs.
“Prosoya Limited must stop any operations that could be causing the odours and make unspecified changes to mitigate them,” he said.

The Nairobi City County’s public health team had warned the factory management several times of the health hazard posed by the emissions but no action was taken.

The factory premises are being used as a slaughter house and the foul smell emanates from liquids released from the factory.

“What is even more disturbing is that there is a primary school next to the premises who confirm having registered concerns to NEMA, but no action had been taken prior to my order,” the governor said, and assured the public of the county government’s resolve to enforce all the by-laws.
