MACHAKOS, Kenya, Apr 28 – Machakos Governor Dr Alfred Mutua has sounded an alert over the build up of intolerance, tribal politics and violent activities which he warned could lead to post election violence come 2017.

He said the current rise in political temperatures in the country reminds of the activities leading up to the 2007 election and the subsequent 2008 post-election violence.

“I was serving in the then Central Government at the time and to me what is going on in the Kenya political scene is akin to Déjà-vu. I am currently disturbed and wish to express my views,” said Mutua.

He warned leaders and the people of Kenya that with the continued heightened political, tribal and violence climate, there is no doubt the country will burn again.

“The activities and statements being made by leaders of many affiliations are ingredients for fire and fire burns,” said Mutua.

He said the ascension to political power is not a bad thing but should not be at the expense of the country Kenya and bloodshed.

Mutua said leaders agitating for mass movements and violent activities may not realise, but they are inadvertently creating an environment and fodder for violence and the destruction of Kenya.

“This is exactly how it all started in 2006. Polarisation of our country will result in hatred and violence. Already intolerance is taking root and tribal temperatures and insults are rising and if not checked will lead to deaths,” said Mutua.

He said no leader, however important or principled, should be allowed to create activities that will eventually lead to the deaths of our mothers, fathers and children.

Mutua said the curse of Africa is that we tend to destroy ourselves and hence remain the poorest continent in the world despite our enormous resources and potential.

“I call upon all leaders, to rethink their strategies and to tone down so that we preach love, tolerance, non-violence and unity. That is the only way to save our Country,” said Mutua.
