NAIROBI, Kenya, Apr 24 – To win anything, one should have confidence and work hard towards achieving the set goal.
This is how Businessman Chris Kirubi summarised the win by Capital FM’s Football team that scooped the 2016 Standard Chartered Trophy in Anfield Stadium on Saturday.
“It was great joy after I received the news. The team before they left promised me, ‘we will bring back the cup’ and I thought, well these guys don’t know what they were talking about. They were competing for the first time with international teams, I am very delighted,” he stated.
The Best Mix of Music team crushed defending champions South Korea 3-2 win after beating Ghana, USA, Singapore, Hong Kong and India.

Dr Kirubi could not hide his joy as he congratulated the team which he said had indeed pulled a big surprise on him.
“We are a small team from Capital FM, finding people who can beat not only the local teams here but go and win in the world is amazing. It’s not how much noise you make, it is not how many you are in an organisation, it is how committed those who are playing the role are.”
“To be honest, we scrambled from every department at Capital FM to be able to make up a team. We did not even have any standby players who could take over in case one of them fell sick,” Kirubi explained.
Dr Kirubi who is also the Chairman of Brand Kenya Board said the win was not only Capital FM’s but for Kenya which has also excelled in athletics and the most recent outstanding win of the rugby team.
In his view, Kenyans have variety of talents and sports which should be supported within and outside Kenya.
He advised public and private companies to support their staff in other areas other than their daily work routines to build Kenya’s sport industry and also help them fulfil their goals outside their careers.
“We have a culture of encouraging everybody to excel. We hire young and determined people with the right attitude.
We have a small team that is very focused and committed and a team that is given freedom to excel. I work with them not as a chairman but as a colleague in the industry. This sort of structure has helped us to work as a family and excel in other areas as well,” chairman explained.
Even as he wished the team comprising Most Valuable Player Jeffrey Ooko and Golden Boot winner Solomon Okeyo, skipper Lassie Atrash, Alex Isaboke, Kristian Malumbe, Shaffie Soud and Ali Athman success, he promised that a big welcome party awaited them upon arrival back in the country on Monday morning.
