NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 4 – Residents of Kericho County and Malindi Constituency have been urged to maintain calm before and during Monday’s by-elections.

Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet says adequate security measures have been put in place to ensure peace prevails during the two mini-polls.

“We shall ensure that peace prevails in the two electoral areas before, during the elections and in the period immediately after the elections results are announced,” he said.

In a statement sent to newsrooms on Friday, Boinnet cautioned that people who breach the law will be dealt with firmly.

Campaigns in both areas are expected to conclude on Saturday at 6pm.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) already say preparations are on course for the by-elections.

The commission said it had appointed Moses Ledama Sunkuli to be the Kericho County Returning officer while Stephen Kitsao Karani will oversee the poll in Malindi.

A total of 3,214 election officials will be deployed in Kericho and 550 in Malindi, adding that they will finalize training for the election on Saturday.

The Kericho Senate contest has attracted six candidates including JAP’s Aaron Cheruiyot and KANU’s Paul Sang who will be hoping that majority of the area’s 290,947 registered voters elect one of them.

In Malindi, 55,853 registered voters will be choosing between JAP’s Phillip Charo and ODM’s Willy Mtengo who have emerged as front-runners in a field of five candidates who were cleared to participate in the poll.

Kericho County has 623 polling stations across 30 County Assembly Wards while Malindi Constituency has 100 polling stations in five County Assembly Wards.
