NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 11 – Every time the rainy season comes, Nairobi residents are more worried than thrilled in a city characterized by a clogged and obsolete drainage system.

The script has always been consistent with authorities both at the County and the National Government vowing to ensure things “will be better next time it rains.”

The meteorological department has now issued an early warning to the government and the residents of the city ahead of the long rainy season.

“The long rains will be here in a month’s time and we cannot rule out any disasters. People need to be prepared for any eventuality,” Samuel Mwangi the Kenya Metrological Department Deputy Director said.

“Some areas will get near normal rainfall and even in areas we expect to get below normal rainfall will have a few days within the season where they will receive rainfall.”

Mwangi also noted the importance of clearing drainage systems around to avoid breeding of mosquitoes and spreading of diseases and any other inconveniences that may be caused by the rains.

However, as people from the countryside look forward to the rains because of bounty harvests that come with it, city residents aren’t looking forward to the rains as it is brings about inconveniences such as traffic and most of all flooding associated with poor drainage systems.

Capital FM news sought the views of Nairobi residents on the matter… “The government is yet to address the issue of poor drainage system in Nairobi adequately, we clearly know and understand our weather patterns, and we know the implications of each,” Nancy a Nairobi resident said.

“Flooded stagnant water, bust sewers, people walking carefully while crossing the roads to avoid pools of rain water is a site that’s too familiar to many,” she reiterated.

It is not yet clear what plans the County Government has put in place to ensure the city residents are not inconvenienced.
