Maina needs whopping Sh8mn to undergo liver transplant

Though untreatable, the condition can be managed and that’s why Maina needs an urgent liver transplant which can only be done in India.

“If we had a liver centre in Kenya, this would greatly cut the cost. We are currently working with medical stakeholders, religious leaders as well as experts to draft the rules that will govern the transplantation process,” Dr Ondede observes.

“His condition at its current state can only be managed by a liver transplant. That will cost him Sh8 million to have the transplant done in India.”

The figure accounts for accommodation, recuperation, doctor’s consultation fees, as well as Immunosuppressant drugs that will help him support his new liver.

Currently, according to Dr Ondede, Kenya has only one liver splitting machine placed at Kenyatta National Hospital.

“We are in the process of sending three other Nurses to a liver centre in India that has a high volume of liver transplants to acquire the skills required,” Dr Ondede says.

At least Sh400 million would be needed to start the liver centre in Kenya in the next 2-3 years.

During Maina’s recent visit to hospital, he was informed that he urgently needs a liver transplant where he was cautioned that as more time passes, the harder the transplant will be.

If left untreated it would eventually lead to kidney and heart failure.
