Kidero to launch night market to promote 24hr economy

NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 14 – A night market targeting young traders that’s aimed at promoting a 24 hour economy in Nairobi is set to be launched next week at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre.

The initiative by the Youth Agenda to be launched by Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero will attract more than 300 youthful entrepreneurs and will commence at 4pm and end at midnight.

“This is a significant milestone in the growth and development of our economy in the county and the country at large. The initiative is in line with our County Strategic Plan that is geared towards promoting a 24 hour economy so as to improve our socio-economic lives in the county,” he said.

The market will be based at the COMESA grounds at KICC and Kaunda Street and City Hall Way where subsequent markets will be accessed at least once a month will also be zoned off.

“This is among the many other projects that we are supporting as a county to ensure that we promote businesses in the county that is also in line with the Vision 2030 economic blueprint of the Central Government,” Kidero stated.

The Youth Agenda Chief Executive Officer Susan Mwongera noted that it will be the first night market in the country and it is expected that others will be opened in all the 47 counties.

“While the night market is a prevalent trend in other parts of the continent, the Kenyan wave will be pioneered and driven by the young people,” she stated.

She explained that the initiative aimed at providing a solution to the challenge of youth employment through provision of readily accessible markets for their businesses.

The Public Service and Youth Affairs Principal Secretary Lilian Mbogo-Omollo also noted said that the project would open up an opportunity to reap good dividends especially among the youth.
