NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 26 – A majority of Kenyans are commemorating the Easter holiday through attending church and prayers, according to poll by Research Firm Infotrack.
The report indicates that 33.7 percent of Kenyans plan to commemorate the Easter through attending church and prayers while another 27.3 percent have no plan for the Easter.
Another 10 percent will celebrate Easter by visiting a friend or a relative with another 8.9 percent of Kenyans indicating they will continue with their daily work/business.
Only 5 percent of Kenyans plan to travel for the holiday.
Those who have no plans for the season find no meaning in Easter and therefore feel no need to make any plans with a quarter of the Christians interviewed indicating that they had no plans over the Easter break.
Other reasons for not commemorating Easter according to the report is finances as this year’s Easter comes at a time when most workers haven’t been paid.
“Further, it is no secret that Kenyans have consistently complained about the high cost of living. Whilst these people would like to spend the Easter break either on holiday or travelling, their wallets are too tight to allow for these luxuries,” the report elaborates.
According to the poll, Nairobians expressed the least intention of attending church and prayers during this Holy week as 31 percent of them stated that they had no plans in place while in nearly half of those in Western and Eastern intend to spend their Easter in church and in prayer.
“Even 15 percent of those in North Eastern, a region that is predominantly Islamic claimed that they intend to spend Easter in prayer either in a church or a mosque,” the report states.
Among the major highlights of the report is that more women intend to spend Easter in Church and in prayers in comparison to men with 38 percent of women intend to spend their time in church compared to 29 percent of men who intend to spend their time in prayer and in church.
Comparing rural and urban, 40 percent of Kenyans from rural areas will spend Easter in Church compared to 26 percent from the urban areas.
“It is mainly the mature adults aged 45 years and above who plan to attend church/prayers during the Easter festivities,” the report observes.
More young adults intend to spend their Easter break doing nothing when compared to those who intend to go to church, visit friends and relatives or even travel, only 13 percent of young adults intend to socialise with their friends and relatives while another 11 percent will be working as usual.

The poll was conducted between March 20 and 22, 2016.
A sample of 1800 respondents was interviewed to represent Kenya adult population of 19,483,435, translating into a margin of error +/-2.31 at 95 percent degree of confidence.
