NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 10 – Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho’s security detail has been withdrawn following allegations that they assaulted a woman during campaigns for the Malindi by-election.
They were ordered out hours after Mombasa County Commissioner Nelson Marwa told residents that Joho’s bodyguards were involved in the incident.
“I am told that all the orderlies attached to Joho, (Amason) Kingi, Aisha (Jumwa) were the ones attacking citizens in Malindi…how do you do that?” a visibly angered Marwa wondered.
“Their leaders (security bosses) are just silent in Nairobi. Who will defend Kenyans?”
The Governor however says he does not know the reason why his two bodyguards and five Administration Police officers attached to his home were withdrawn.
“Let it be known to those executing this order and their masters that I will not be intimidated or arm twisted into changing my political course and brand politics,” Joho who links the move to his political affiliation said in a statement.
“I have the right to security as a leader and governor. This is not a favour the government is doing me.”
He said this was part of the larger scheme by the Jubilee government to frustrate him, “because of my political stand.”
Police have confirmed that Joho’s bodyguards and those of Kilifi Governor Amason Kingi as well as Kilifi Woman Representative Aishwa Jumwa are under investigation after a formal complaint was lodged soon after the incident.
“Are they gods? Why must they break the law with impunity?” Marwa asked.
He said the despite the political position of the three leaders; they should respect the people who have elevated them to the said position.
“Why must, Joho, Kingi and Aisha break the law with impunity? … someone gonna take responsibility for this,” he warned.
He told all security officers within the region, attached to VIPs, “You must respect wananchi.”
During the Malindi by-election, a number of legislators were also assaulted after they were accused of bribing voters.
In one of the incidents, police were forced to shoot in the air to disperse a group of youths who had attacked Lamu East MP Shariff Athman who was accused of buying votes.
