NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 15 – Murang’a Governor Mwangi Wa Iria will not be charged on Tuesday as earlier scheduled, according to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).
EACC Spokesman Kairichi Marimba told Capital FM News that “plea taking has been deferred to tomorrow (Wednesday)”.
“There has been a change of plan… the (Murang’a) Governor will not be charged today,” he said without giving reasons.
Capital FM News however established that the change of plan was necessitated by Governor Iria’s intent to attend the funeral of former Kandara MP George Mwicigi which was to be attended by President Uhuru Kenyatta.
The commission had announced that Wa Iria and his bodyguard were scheduled to be charged for obstruction and incitement on Tuesday morning, after being freed on bonds of Sh100,000 each.
They were arrested on Monday afternoon outside the Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi over an incident in January in which Wa Iria was accused of obstructing EACC detectives who raided his house in Thika.

The two were freed late on Monday after protests by their lawyer Mbugua Ng’ang’a who accused the commission’s detectives of harassing Wa Iria.
“How many Governors out there are facing more serious issues than Wa Iria and yet they are detaining him this long on an offence that is bailable,” the lawyer protested before the governor was freed shortly before 8pm Monday.
Wa Iria denies the allegations of obstructing EACC detectives at his home and instead accused them of not following protocol when raiding his home.
