NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 6 – Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko’s bodyguard Bakari Chuma was shot by suspected robbers in the wee hours of Saturday morning and later succumbed to his injuries while admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of the Nairobi Hospital on Sunday.

According to the Senator, Chuma had dropped him off at his residence and was on his way home when he was accosted by four men armed with an AK-47 in Kasarani.

His wife told police that they had stopped by a butchery and were exiting when the incident took place; she escaped unhurt.

Nairobi County Commander Japheth Koome told Capital FM News that the suspects made away with Chuma’s Ceska pistol.

Chuma, a Muslim, was to be laid to rest at his Kwale home on Sunday and leaves behind a daughter who is in class seven and whom Sonko personally chauffeured from the St. Paul’s Chuka boarding school for her father’s burial.

Chuma was headed home to the Mwiki police lines when he was shot.
