In a statement, the Association’s Chairperson Peter Murima has termed the intended move of tolling as unwise, unjustifiable and unconstitutional saying it is contrary to freedom of movement.
“The intention to charge vehicle owners more to use public roads is unwise and unjustifiable. To reintroduce toll roads which were replaced by fuel levy paid upfront for every litre of fuel paid by motorists is wrong,” he says.
Kenya National Highways Authority has recently erected billboards on key roads including Langa’ta Road notifying motorists of the intention to introduce user fees – tolls – to boost the pool of cash it is currently collecting through fuel levy.
Murima has therefore urged the government to make good use of money which he says is being misused by present public private partnership road construction system.
Additionally, he has asked the government to copy The People’s Republic of China model where construction companies are state owned thus cutting costs by half.
“The government’s action will mean that the toll charges will be pure double taxation. At Motorists Association of Kenya we shall never allow this prejudice,” he said.
Murima has therefore said that the association shall within 21 days meet to decide its next cause of action to protect interest of its registered members.
“We have written to Kenya National Highway Authority KeNHA the protest letter with ultimatum,” he wrote in conclusion.
