NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 12- Kenya’s Ambassador Zachari Muburi-Muita has been elected as the Executive Secretary of the International Conference of the Great Lakes Region.

He was elected to the position on Friday during the ongoing regional foreign affairs ministers meeting in Luanda, Angola.

He won with six votes against Zambia and South Sudan candidates, who each got 3 votes.

His name will now be forwarded to the Heads of State Summit on March 22, 2016 for formal appointment.

Muburi-Muita will take over from Ntumba Luaba, who has been heading the prestigious body since December 2011.
