KERICHO, Kenya Feb 20 – Deputy President William Ruto on Saturday accused KANU and other Opposition parties of ganging up to divide voters in Rift Valley where he enjoys massive support.
Ruto said the move by the country’s independence party, KANU and the Opposition to work together in the upcoming Kericho by-election has nothing to do with winning the seat but split the region.
“What is happening is that KANU is coming through the back door with the intention of dividing and spoiling for the Jubilee Party and not about winning the Kericho senatorial seat,” he said while addressing campaign rallies for the Jubilee Party candidate Aaron Cheruiyot at various trading centres in the County.
“You should ignore those spreading propaganda that Jubilee has failed. They want to join the Opposition and they want to take you along,” said the Deputy President, in reference to Bomet Governor Isaac Ruto and KANU Chairman Gideon Moi who held a major rally in Kapkatet on Thursday.
The Deputy President who was accompanied by other leaders from the region addressed rallies at Lelu primary school in Kipkellion West, Singowet open grounds, Kapsoit Junction, Belgut, Seretut open grounds and Cheborgei trading center.
He was accompanied by MPs Jackson Rop (Kipkellion West), Benjamin Langat (Ainamoi), Joseph Limo (Kipkelion East), Eric Keter (Belgut), Hellen Chepkwony (Kericho) and Governors Paul Chepkwony (Kericho) and Samuel Tunai of Narok.
The leaders urged residents in the area to vote for the Jubilee candidate for the sake of accelerated development in the area.
“We are firmly under the leadership of President Uhuru Kenyatta and Deputy President William Ruto. We want to assure Jubilee that residents of Kericho County will vote for the party’s candidate come March 7 elections,” Rop said.
The Deputy President told the people of Rift Valley to be careful not to be misled by people who wanted to deny them leadership.
“We should not allow some leaders to tell us to destroy the house we have built because they want us to be in Opposition like them,” Ruto warned.
“I have come here today to ask you to vote for our candidate Cheruiyot to continue from where Keter, now Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary left,” Ruto pleaded.
The senatorial seat fell vacant when Keter resigned soon after being appointed the Cabinet Secretary for Energy.
He told residents in the County to come out in large numbers and vote for Cheruiyot for the sake of development in the area saying he was well placed to unite the people.
“It is only the Government in power that can help solve the problems facing you in this County and no one else should cheat you that the Opposition can solve your problems,” he insisted.
