Flying Squad boss Saidi Kiprotich led his officers in distributing flowers and other pleasantries to staff and the ailing children at the hospital.
“Valentine’s Day is a time synonymous with showing love to our loved ones; there are no people who are more deserving of our undying love than our children. It is in this regard that members of our unit sat down and decided to spend some little time with the ailing children and to spread the Valentine love and share with them,” Kiprotich said and thanked his officers and Gertrude’s Staff for an eventful visit.
Doris Livasia an official at the hospital who spoke o behalf of the Chief Executive Officer urged Kenyans to emulate the officers and spend time with the children.
“We are grateful and humbled to have people around, we just pray that you will continue visiting us anytime of the day or night, and any other day not just Valentine’s Day so that you can also come and play with the children, talk to parents and encourage them. I know you do the same job as the one we are doing; always caring for people and you must always remember care for yourself first before your care for other people,” Lisavia said, representing the CEO Gordon Odundo.
For parents Hilda Kinyua, Mbindi and Njeri Kimanthi the gesture by the officers helped bring out the soft side of the dreaded unit which is known with hard battles with hardcore criminals.
“We are excited from the surprise we received this morning from the officers, they visited us and shared flowers, cake and dolls with us. That was an amazing show of love, but beyond love it also goes a long way to demystify about members of the services,” Kimanthi said.
His wife Njeri added : “There is nothing that touches a someone’s heart like a seeing an ailing child, and today being a day of showing love, given their reputation the visit by police officers, has really left us feeling uplifted.”
The Kimanthi’s received further good news after they were informed that their daughter will be discharged after spending seven days at the facility.
The over 20 Fly Squad officers who mingled freely with the nurses and patients in the Hospital wards with the static coming from their hand-held new generation radio calls telling them apart from the other visitors and media team who were accompanying them.
They met Janet at the Pediatric Wards who was elated expressed gratitude that the visit coincided with their discharge her son Kelly after being admitted for 10 days.
“We are happy today to be discharged and it is a good way to go and celebrate our day at home, and the team we are also happy for them to visit the sick and show solidarity with us the parents who have been with the sick children,” she said.
