John Mayaka, the elder brother of Stephen Mayaka says the family is frustrated by the sluggish DNA process more than a month after the attack. The attack occurred on January 15.
“We just want to know whether he is dead or alive,” Mayaka told Capital News. “I have been at the Memorial hospital almost every other day.”
He says their effort to enquire on whether their brother was among the fallen or the abducted soldiers has been hectic since no information has been forthcoming from the Government.
Mayaka is torn between resuming his job in the United States of America which he risks losing and taking care of his elderly mother and the three kids of his younger brother.
“Everybody is eager to hear from the Government where Stephen Mayaka is,” he said.
His 80 years old mother is worried and Mayaka fears she may fall ill.
Three weeks ago, Mayaka says his brother’s phone went through but it was picked by someone else who later disconnected.
“Somebody received the phone and asked me what I wanted,” he recounts.
Two days after, the English speaking man received the phone and said “your brother is under torture. Since then, the phone has been switched off.”
After reporting the matter to military intelligence, they were told, “to ignore. They may not be true.”
“We are really frustrated, we are in pain,” he said.
The Government is yet to release the official number of soldiers killed in Somalia.
The Kenya Defence Forces have since moved the camp from El Adde to another camp near the Kenya- Somalia border.
KDF in its offensive attacks have killed a number of militants including key Al Shabaab leaders.
