MOMBASA, Kenya, Feb 12 – The High Court in Mombasa has adjourned the sentencing of two police officers found guilty of killing a 14 year-old Kwale girl to Monday.
This is after Assistant Director of Public Prosecution Alexander Muteti filed an application to have the family of the slain girl, Kwekwe Mwandaza compensated by the two officers.
Inspector Veronica Gitahi and Constable Issa Mzee were found guilty of manslaughter for misusing their firearms when they conducted a botched operation in August 2014.
Muteti said the two officers must be held accountable for the death of the girl hence the need for the family to be compensated for the losses they suffered.
Family lawyer Haroun Ndubi has sought compensation for burial expenses, court proceedings, reburial expenses, transport and accommodation.

Ndubi requested the court to be granted 60 days to enable them compute all the expenses.
However, the lawyer for the officers Jared Magolo opposed the application saying the family of the officers too will suffer when the two are jailed.
Magolo says the officers were dedicated public servants and first offenders.
Judge Martin Muya will make the ruling on Monday.
Human right groups and the family say they expect a fair sentence in the case that has attracted public attention.
