Simeon Meliari said he was happy he could now continue with higher education which had stalled for an entire year.
“I am very grateful. It has been a long journey of suffering. My mother and I tried to raise the money demanded by the school but we needed the money to offset fees balance for me and my brother,” Meliari said.
“I was in shock when I was asked for so much money and I knew we will not get it at all. I had almost given up,” Meliari celebrated.
His case was highlighted on Capital FM News after the school denied him his KCSE certificate.
He had been told to pay Sh6, 500 to buy an electric wire cable as punishment after he was found with a phone charger before he sat for his KCSE.

Capital FM News contacted Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i to have the certificate released without the boy having to pay Sh6, 500 fine.
“The school called me and told me to go and pick the results. I did not meet the head teacher he left the results with the secretary. I am happy my son can now continue to pursue his academic dreams,” Meliari’s mother said.
Meliari hopes to study journalism so that one day he can also fight for needy people in the society the same way he got help from the media.
“I want to study journalism, I would like to use that space to highlight cases of people who want help but they have no mouth to fight,” he said.
Nakeel Boys’ High School had claimed that Meliari was found with a phone charger and the punishment was for him to pay the money before he could get his KCSE certificate.
He had asked to be given any other form of punishment like washing classrooms or slashing but not punishment that required him to pay money because they were financially unstable.
