The vehicle was trailed to Boni forest where security agencies engaged the militia who were on board, killing four instantly.
Kenya Defence Forces spokesperson David Obonyo in a statement said two of the accomplices escaped with multiple bullet wounds.
“Hot pursuit of the terrorist is ongoing. There were no casualties on the security forces,” he said.
He said the security forces recovered four AK47 rifles, three Improvised Explosive Devices, three pistols, ammunition and a GPS system.
The police vehicle had been stolen, “in December 2015 at Milihoi near Mkumbani area in Lamu County.”
The vehicle was however rigged with explosives and body trapped, “prompting them to detonate the explosives and the vehicle was also damaged in the process.”
“The security forces in the area implore the local residents to report to them any individuals seeking medical attention with injuries sustained under unclear circumstances.”
The recovery comes hours after Al Shabaab militia killed 3 people in the county.
