NAIROBI, Kenya Feb 3 – Mount Kenya University has engaged two top lecturers from India to spearhead its medical health training, days after receiving accolades from the Health Ministry as one of 10 local universities that have complied with set standards.

Dr Alpana KulKarni and Dr Pradeep KulKarni are a couple with over 28 years of teaching experience in Indian universities.

“This is a milestone for us as an institution and both will join as associate professors,” MKU Chairman and founder Simon Gicharu said.

MKU, with 80 medical students, is among 10 universities in Kenya offering medical and dentistry courses which were cleared by the East Africa Medical Boards and Councils to continue training.

The others are the University of Nairobi, Moi University, Kenyatta University, Maseno University as well as the Methodist University.

The regional board has now tasked the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists board to make the necessary follow ups to ensure those approved continue to meet the required standards in offering quality education.

Speaking last week at a dinner hosted for the East Africa Medical Boards and Councils, Health Cabinet Secretary Dr Cleopa Mailu lauded the body for developing guidelines that will help in the inspection and accreditation of medical schools in the region.

He emphasised the need for approved medical schools to adhere to the set curriculum in ensuring that only well-trained doctors are released to the job market.

He said “placing medical education on a basis of shared standards will facilitate exchange of medical students and enhance the acceptance and recognition of medical and dental practitioners in the region.”
