NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 27 – Former Devolution Cabinet Secretary Anne Waiguru is mulling running for the Nairobi Gubernatorial seat in the 2017 General Election.

This follows her endorsement by a cross section of leaders in Nairobi, including Evans Ondieki who was sacked as the Nairobi County Environment executive.

During a meeting at Ufungamano House, Ondieki emphasized that Waiguru was qualified to run for the seat and stated his support for her in the polls.

“What is wrong if a woman is left to look after the homestead? Is there any problem with that? Now know this that when you agree that a woman should get the seat, men will insult you,” he told the group of leaders.

“You will be called all the names that you have never been called in this world. Do not let that deter you but go on unfazed in the battle,” he said.

Waiguru on her part stated that she will hold consultations at grass root levels where she will consider the proposal before making up her mind on the issue.

“We as women are very unique. If we are told anything, the first thing that we do is to pray. We will take time to talk to people here and there and then we will arrange another meeting where we will state the way forward,” she said.
She however indicated that in the meantime, she will be working closely with women groups and the youth in an effort to improve their lot in life.

“This weekend we will be in Embakasi and then we have also been invited to Kangemi,” she said.

Waiguru resigned last year following the National Youth Service (NYS) scandal citing health reasons and following doctors’ advice.

In her statement, she had asked the president to reassign her lighter duties when she recovers.

She recently appeared on a Citizen TV interview where she indicated that she was not considering jumping into elective politics. In previous interviews, she has indicated that she is more interested in being a technocrat than joining politics.
