NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 27 – President Uhuru Kenyatta has thrown Ambassador Macharia Kamau’s hat in the ring for the position of UNEP Executive Director.

Ambassador Kamau is currently Kenya’s permanent representative to Kenya’s United Nations mission in New York and Kenya wants to see him to succeed Achim Steiner as head of UNEP when he steps down in June.

“President Kenyatta has submitted to the United Nations Secretary General, the candidature of Amb Macharia Kamau, the Permanent Representative of Kenya to the United Nations in New York, for the position of Executive Director of the United Nations Environmental Program,” State House Spokesman Manoah Esipisu announced at a press briefing on Tuesday.

Ambassador Kamau is a career diplomat, having served in various capacities within the UN system for 25 years.

Most notably, he co-chaired the Open Working Group which developed the post-2015 development goals.

Steiner on his part has been at the helm of UNEP since 2006 when he was unanimously elected by the United Nations General Assembly and had his second term extended by two years at the 68th General Assembly of United Nations.

In an exclusive interview with Capital News, Steiner said his most notable achievement in that time has been the actualisation of the United Nations Environment Assembly.

The first UNEA in history was held in Kenya in June 2014.

Kenya also made history when it became the first developing country to host a UN headquarters back in the 70s.
