NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 15 – Central Bank of Kenya Chairman Mohammed Nyaoga has now given CORD leader Raila Odinga until midday Monday, to retract and apologise over allegations linking him to the Eurobond saga.

In a letter from Ogetto, Otachi & Company Advocates, Nyaoga cautioned that he would institute legal proceedings against Odinga if he fails to heed the demand for tarnishing his name with “baseless allegations.”

“As a consequence of your baseless, malicious, reckless and unwarranted accusation, our client has been defamed and has suffered enormous loss and damage for which we demand that you retract your statement and proffer an appropriate apology in terms agreeable to ourselves,” lawyer Kennedy Ogeto said in the letter to Odinga on Friday.

Nyaoga is among 10 individuals named by the CORD leader on the basis of their positions at Central Bank of Kenya and Treasury for alleged roles in the loss of billions of shillings from the Eurobond.

“The persons of interests are basically because of their positions or responsibility. That is why we are saying they are the people who got the information. They may be on the first line but as you know an onion… you peel the first layer. So other names will come,” the CORD leader told journalists on Thursday.

Others named are State House Chief of Staff Joseph Kinyua, Treasury Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich, Treasury Principal Secretary Kamau Thugge as well as former Central Bank Governor Njuguna Ndung’u who have all threatened legal action against the ex-Prime Minister.

In the letter to Odinga, Ogeto demanded that he provides “full and detailed particulars of our client’s alleged role in this alleged scandal.”

“Your written response on all the matters raised herein should reach our offices latest by 12 noon, Monday, 18 January 2016. Please note that unless our demands as outlined in this letter are met as indicated in the foregoing, we have instructions to forthwith institute the appropriate legal proceedings against you without further notice,” Ogeto said.

Nyaoga had on Thursday told Capital FM News that he was not at the Central Bank of Kenya at the time the Eurobond transaction.

“This is a very cheap falsity and constitutes reckless impunity. I had no direct involvement in the issue; in any event, I was not even in the CBK at the time and had not been vetted or interviewed for the position,” Nyaoga said on telephone. “I find this extreme oppression to my person and character that I have built over the years. Somebody must pay for it. He should have ascertained the truth unless there are other ulterior motives.”

Ogeto is also acting for the State House Chief of Staff Kinyua who equally demanded an apology from Odinga.

“Hon Raila’s attempt to link Mr Kinyua to this imaginary scandal is the product of a malicious and reckless political witch -hunt which will not pass unchallenged,” the lawyer said in a statement. “We
