MACHAKOS, Kenya Jan 24 – Machakos Governor Dr Alfred Mutua and four Ukambani legislators have said that the Maendeleo Chap Chap movement wave is ‘unstoppable’ and dismissed a rally held in Machakos town by the Wiper party as ‘politically inconsequential’.

Mutua said Wiper top leadership had panicked due to the paradigm shift in Ukambani politics which, he said, was now tilting to development instead of populist rhetoric.

“Maendeleo chap chap aims at bringing real change and development to the people and employing strategies that will tackle the poverty facing our people. Politicians who thrive on empty promises and chest thumping at rallies will soon become political dinosaurs and irrelevant, “said Mutua, who spoke through his Press Secretary Mutinda Mwanzia.

Wiper Party last Friday held a delegates meeting and later a rally in Machakos town where they endorsed former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka as the party’s presidential flag bearer.

CORD luminaries Raila Odinga and Moses Wetangula also attended the Machakos meetings.

Mutua, who has differed with the Wiper leadership, did not attend the meetings as he is out of the country but wrote to his Deputy Bernard Kiala asking him to represent him.

Only Kakamega Senator Bonny Khalwale openly attacked Mutua for launching his movement.

MPs allied to Mutua who spoke to reporters in Machakos Town and who included Dr Victor Munyaka (Machakos Town), John Munuve (Mwingi North), Vincent Musyoka (Mwala), Itwiku Mbai (Masinga) and Tip Tip party leader Kalembe Ndile hit out at Wiper for advocating the politics of ‘poverty and marginalisation’.

Ndile told off Khalwale and urged him to keep off Ukambani politics and concentrate on salvaging his political career in Kakamega terming him a “gun for hire”.

“Wiper has no agenda for Kamba’s and is only using Kalonzo as bait to harvest votes from the community for Raila. Kalonzo is politically finished and does not need the likes of Khalwale to redeem his career,” said Ndile.

The former Kibwezi MP said no serious leaders from the region attended the Wiper rally, adding it was a “testimony that Kalonzo’s clout in the region was waning”.

“That’s why Wiper had to lure Raila and Wetangula to attend the rally so as to give it some significance. Kalonzo’s goose is cooked,” said Munyaka.

He added that the Wiper meeting failed to discuss Mutua as anticipated adding that Kalonzo and his team had sensed a backlash from delegates if they use the forum to attack the governor.

“I can tell you for sure that Mutua has made Kalonzo and his team run scared. His style of operation is deadly because it is supported by the masses,” said Munyaka.

On his part, Mbai said Mutua has electrified the political landscape in Ukambani and the nation at large through his movement which has promised to radically change how politics is done.

He added that Kalonzo’s fortunes are also dipping due to the fact that Raila was seen as the automatic CORD coalition presidential flag bearer come 2017.

“That’s why we as leaders support Mutua due to his paradigm shift from the politics of poverty to the politics of development unlike others who want power for their own selfish gains ,” Mbai .

Munuve urged the Kamba community not to be fooled to continue supporting an individual who has no development track record despite having served in successive governments for many years.

“We will support a grade cow that can be milked and not a cow that cannot even produce a litre of milk,” said Munuve.

Machakos Maendeleo ya Wanawake Organisation Chairperson Francisca Mutinda also hit out at Wiper for hijacking the venue of their rally which, she said, had been booked by the women’s group for a workshop.

Mutinda said they had booked the Mulu Mutisya gardens for their function but had to relocate to the Machakos social hall.

“Wiper has shown that it does not respect women. We will meet in the ballot come 2017,” said Mutinda.
