He said there is need for all Kenyans of goodwill to join hands and preach peace without which no tangible development can take place.
“We need to honour and respect each other as Kenyans and ensure the freedom of worship and other basic rights are fully guarded,” said President Kenyatta.
He was speaking in Lamu town when he joined the Muslim faithful for evening Maulidi prayer at the Riyadha Mosque.
The President pointed out that he had held discussions with Lamu leaders with a view of fastracking development in the area.
He said the government will speed up implementation of various projects earmarked for the area in order to create job and investment opportunities for both the locals and foreigners.
Lamu Governor Issa Timamy thanked the President for joining the residents of Lamu in marking the annual Maulidi celebrations in the County.
Speaking during the function, Sheikh Abdi Kadri who was leading the prayers said Islam is a religion of peace and that those who act contrary are enemies not only of humanity but also of God.
He said as per the teachings of the Holy Koran, Islam does not advocate violence but rather values human life.
“Islam gives its followers freedom and does not discriminate women but empowers them to achieve their goals in life,” said the Riyadha Mosque Sheikh.
Sheikh Abdi Kadri commended the Government for helping the Muslim clergy come up with curriculum of de-radicalization.
President Kenyatta is today in Faza Island in Lamu County issuing title deeds to the residents of the Island.
