NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 7- Nairobi County Chief of Staff George Wainaina is being detained by Ethics and Anti Corruption Commission (EACC) detectives following his arrest on Wednesday night over corruption allegations.

He was arrested alongside his secretary on accusations of attempting to bribe Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko with Sh1 million not to raise corruption issues.

Wainaina was picked up by detectives from a church where he had been attending a funeral harambee and driven to Integrity Centre under tight security.

An EACC official has told Capital News that Wainaina is being investigated on various allegations, including the sale of the multi-million shilling Loresho wetland.

“He is being investigated on a number of issues… the Loresho water reservoir land is one of them,” he said.

The land was recently repossessed from a private developer, who had already started construction just a few metres from the reservoir that serves the Nairobi populace with clean water.

This was after the intervention of the Nairobi Senator, who first led a peaceful demonstration before reaching out to the President for help.

Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet led other senior officers including EACC Chief Executive Officer Halakhe Waqo in effecting the orders.

The private developer had earlier ignored court orders barring developing of the land.

He is expected to be arraigned in court once the investigations are completed.
