NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 25 – The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has cautioned police officers against engaging in political affairs while executing their duties.

The authority’s Chairman Macharia Njeru says they have received numerous grievances from the public and several institutions regarding alleged police partiality in matters politics.

“The National Police Service is expected to remain strictly professional in discharge of its duties to the members of the public and subject to any member of the public remaining peaceful and observing the law no one should be denied their inalienable constitutional rights to freely express their political views, associate with whomsoever they wish, or canvass their political ideals whether in a gathering or otherwise,” he said.

Njeru, in a statement to newsrooms on Monday said police officers should never act in a partisan manner, further any interest of a political party or prejudice a political interest that is legitimate under the constitution.

He cautioned that such cases will be expeditiously investigated and criminal charges recommended against culpable officers.

“IPOA therefore underscores that any allegations of police misconduct touching on police partiality will be investigated expeditiously and where culpability is found recommendations for criminal charges will be made to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions. The police commanders are particularly urged to note this,” he warned.

There have been recent cases where politicians have allegedly been barred from holding political rallies for supposed political reasons.
