NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 25 – Investigations have been launched to establish how an inmate serving life imprisonment managed to get out of his cell on Sunday night in a bid to escape.

Prison officers were forced to fire in the air to thwart the attempted jailbreak amid uncertainty over how many inmates were involved or whether it was a diversionary tactic to create ‘space’ for his counterparts to escape.

Officers investigating the matter will focus on three key issues in a bid to unravel the mystery behind the foiled escape bid.

“The scope of our investigation is wide. We are talking about the security of the buildings, the routine operations and deployment of the staff,” Kenya Prisons Deputy Commissioner General Benjamin Njoga said.

According to the preliminary findings, the prisoner had managed to get out of his cell.

Though he could not rule out collusion with either members of the public or staff, Njoga said the probe will also focus on that.

There were no injuries from either party but Njoga says security within the facility has been heightened.

Kamiti holds some of the hardcore criminals in the country.

Even with the probe, Kenya Prisons Commissioner General Isaiah Osugo says the facility is usually on a high alert since such plans are always in the offing.

“There is no prisoner that wants to remain locked up. Nobody wants to stay in the prison,” he told Capital FM News.
