NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 26 – The Central Bank of Kenya Chairman Mohamed Nyaoga has filed a defamation suit against the opposition leader Raila Odinga, for linking him to the alleged Eurobond saga.

Nyaoga has accused Odinga of mentioning his name as a person of interest during a press conference, “without checking the facts about the transaction.”

Odinga has questioned transactions surrounding the Eurobond, alleging that the National Treasury did not pay into the Consolidated Fund the full amount.

He then proceeded to name several top government officials, including Nyaoga, linking them into the alleged scandal.

“The Sh173, 017, 599, 948 is the amount that was transacted when I had not been appointed the chairman board of directors of the Central Bank of Kenya,” Nyaoga has argued.

Nyaoga said that, “Raila is not a public servant well placed to know the government transaction.”

He argues that Odinga was invited by CS finance to ascertain the transaction and even invited by the Ethics and Anti Corruption Commission but declined to honour the summons.

“Before making any statement concerning the Eurobond he ought to have contacted the persons he mentioned at the press conference,” he says.

At the hearing of the defamation suit Nyaoga will be asking the court to award him damages arising from Odinga’s statement.
