6 Opposition MPs to defend seats on Jubilee ticket

KILIFI, Kenya, Jan 3 – Six Opposition Members of Parliament have agreed to join and defend their seats on the Jubilee Party ticket in the 2017 General Election.

The MPs, mainly from CORD, who spoke at a leaders meeting attended by Deputy President William Ruto said they were “tired” of being in the Opposition.

The MPs said that they have discovered the benefits of working with the government.

The MPs include Peter Shehe (Ganze) Mustapha Idi (Kilifi South) Gideon Mung’aro (Kilifi North), James Kamote (Rabai), Khatib Mwashetani (Lunga Lunga) and Gunga Mwinga Kaddu Asili (Kaloleni).

Also present was URP’s Harrison Kombe (Magarini) Nominated Senator Mvita Kisasa (TNA) and former Malindi MP Dan Kazungu (ODM) who was recently appointed Mining Cabinet Secretary and National Assembly Majority Leader Aden Duale.

Mung’aro said the region has immensely benefited since the MPs declared their support to the government.

“We are tired of making noise as the opposition, it is time we are fully represented in the government, we cannot stand to be in the cold anymore,” he said.

Mwashetani said the people of the region have for long languished in the opposition which had nothing to offer other than empty rhetoric.

“We can see the numerous development activities by the government especially in roads and health sector. We now urge the government to settle the land problem once and for all, “he said.

Duale said North Eastern and other marginalized areas were fully benefiting from the numerous development projects initiated by the government.

He said the Cord leaders were only good at preaching divisive and anti development politics while they themselves had nothing to show when they served in the previous government.

Ruto urged the people of the region to fully support the government as it was committed to serving all Kenyans irrespective of their political inclination.

Ruto said the recently formed Jubilee Party intends to unite all Kenyans irrespective of their tribes or region.

The Deputy President said the party is composed of Individuals from different backgrounds and regions

He observed that Kenya will only develop when people put their tribal and regional affiliations aside and focus on national unity.

“The government is ready to work with all Kenyans whether they voted for us or the Opposition,” he added.

The Deputy President said coastal residents should support the government as it was resolving their problems.

Ruto observed that the presence of President Uhuru Kenyatta and himself in Coast during the New Year festivities was a reassurance of security in the region.

“We want to assure you that we are working day and night to ensure the coast region is fully secure. We urge you to continue with the unity shown by leaders, locals and the security organs,” he said.
