NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 25 – Families came out in large numbers on Friday during the festive season as people used the time to relax and enjoy themselves in the spirit of Christmas.

Uhuru Park was fully parked as many enjoyed camel and horseback riding, go-kart riding, boat riding and some just relaxed on the lawns of the park as they caught up with family and friends.

Capital FM News interviewed a number of people who pointed out the December 25th afforded them the chance to engage in the spirit of giving and also reflect on the past year.

“I thank God that he had made it possible for us to reach this point. We are now celebrating although I did not travel home but it is life that is the important thing,” Jane Mumbua, a mother of two, stated.

“The day today has been good. It has not rained and everyone has enjoyed themselves. Even security is quite good and there has not been any incidence,” Ben Njoroge, a business man stated.

“The whole of today has been very good. I had a lot of fun. I just purposely took my kids out and I know they had a good time,” stated Claire Musyoka, a University student. “The day today has been good and as you can see everyone is having fun.”

Other people while pointing out to some of the challenges experienced in 2015 expressed hope that things would be better in 2016.

“Today I have been in the water boat riding, after that I rode a motorbike and I want to urge everyone that this is the Christmas season and we need to go on like that,” Chrispinus Wambua a Primary school student said.

“So many challenges have been there but so far so good. What has really made me happy is that security is beefed up and good and that there has been not major incidences,” stated Esther Nyaga, a mother of three boys.

At the Uhuru Park, business boomed as the place was overflowing with people and hawkers took advantage of the situation to sell their wares.

A number of them who spoke to Capital FM News stated that they have never had such a boom in business and emphasized the need for such a kind of environment to be provided for them.

“I have made a profit of Sh5,000. Today everyone is happy and even the one who does not have much money will spend something,” Benard Ogolla a tuk tuk driver stated

“Today is very good. We are expecting good things. The only thing is that the cold is a bit too much but that is good since I have made much money,” David Mwangi and ice cream vendor reiterated.

“We are happy today December 25th and I hope that I can engage in a lot of business. If things go well then I can finish selling all my wares,” Simon Wekesa another trader stated

At the same time, some people said that they were using the day to have a good time and did not mind spending their money.

“I already have a lot of profit and now I am looking for the owners’ portion. I have seen that there are many people and we are waiting for the rest and hopefully I will make enough profit,” John Wesala stated.

“The only thing that we are waiting for now is for schools to open and we start shopping for our children. The work of President Uhuru Kenyatta is being seen because people now have money.”
