NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 2 – Several management officials at Strathmore University now want to resign following Monday’s bungled terror attack drill in which a life was lost and dozens of injuries reported.
Strathmore University Vice- Chancellor Prof. John Odhiambo says the requests have already been handed over to the University Council to institute investigations on the same.
“Many of my colleagues in the management have approached me, expressing their desire to resign to express their concern, strength and the weight of the responsibility they feel towards the occurrences,” he stated.
“The management has studied this matter and accepted the responsibility of the occurrences. Since we cannot as management investigate ourselves objectively, we have decided as a way forward to handle this matter, in accordance to the statute, to the university council,” he said.
Addressing journalists at the university on Wednesday, Odhiambo said the Council will form an all inclusive team in a bid to establish what went wrong and who should be held responsible.
The VC did not however say when they are expected to present the report but only promised that it will be ready in “a short period of time.”
Police are questioning the 8-member management in a bid to take stock of what happened during the tragic security drill, in which they are also interrogating officials.
Detectives from Nairobi Area and Lang’ata Police station visited the institution on Wednesday, where they interrogated the officials.
Police headquarters has distanced itself from the drill, saying higher authorities were not informed even as the university insisted it involved the Lang’ata Police chief.
Police Spokesman Charles Owino has said legal action will be taken against officials at the university who failed to follow proper procedures in conducting the drill.
Odhiambo said the team will decide the fate of those who bear responsibility of the tragic incident and those who want to resign.
He said Monday’s drill was meant to test the measures that had been put in place. But it ended up being a disaster in itself.
The VC explained that the management decided to beef up its preparedness following the Garissa University attack that left 148 people mostly students killed by the Al Shabaab terror group.
Despite the drill flopping, he said the management had learnt big lessons that will help prepare the community in a better way.
